Swine Flu Symptoms (Influenza A H1N1)

The symptoms of swine flu are very similar to common seasonal influenza infections:

  • Fever (100F or greater)
  • Cough
  • Nasal secretions
  • Fatigue. Fatigue is reported in most infected individuals.
  • Headache
  • Aching Muscles
  • Tiredness
  • Chills
  • Sore Throat
  • Sneezing
  • Loss of appetite

Some patients also get:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

Some patients may develop severe respiratory symptoms and should seek respiratory advice from a doctor. Patients can get pneumonia, particularly the elderly and if the viral swine flu infection persists, some people may develop seizures. Death will often occur in cases of Swine Flu from secondary bacterial infection of the lungs. Patients must take the appropriate antibiotics which can be supplied by your GP. The typical mortality (death) rate for common influenza A is about 0.1% worldwide. As of April 2009, Swine flu in Mexico had caused about 160 deaths and about 2,500 confirmed cases, which would equate to a mortality rate of about 6%. It is too early to know the true worldwide mortality rate because new reports are coming in daily and as the world is in a pandemic state the figures are likely to rise until a widespread cure can be distributed. By June 2009, the swine flu virus had reached 74 different countries on the virus was found on every continent except Antarctica.
